Disability Action Center NW

I met with a consumer in a nursing home. Turns out her hearing has become garbled and she doesn’t have or can afford hearing aides. This meant she was very isolated – can’t hear a conversation across the table at mealtime, can’t hear the television in her apartment or in the group lounge. I’ve been working to find a low cost solution for her and we have been testing out the Pocket Talker. This device worked well for my mom when managing hearing aides just got beyond her.

It struck me that, if I hadn’t gone in for a visit and found this out, she would have been left like that.

I understand that nursing homes are over worked and understaffed. But I really want to stress that seniors need to advocate for themselves when this happens, as there are solutions so they needn’t be isolated.

“Disability is natural. We must stop believing that disabilities keep a person from doing something. Because that’s not true . . . Having a disability doesn’t stop me from doing anything.” ― Benjamin Snow, Grade 8
