July wrapped up another Disability Pride month, and for the most part it was a huge success! I did notice some comments on our social media from people with disabilities. Things like “I don’t take a lot of pride in being disabled. I’d like to know who does.” I can see more education is needed.
Disability Pride is not about taking pride in your ongoing challenges and struggles. It’s more about awareness and that having a disability is NOT something to be ashamed of. Disability is a fact of life. It’s just a part of who you are. Disability Pride means we are not hiding. We are here. We are people too. And we can do great things when we work together in our communities.
QUOTES TO MAKE YOU THINK!
“Even though you have a disability, that does not make you disabled [in other ways]. It gives you insight. It gives you knowledge. It gives you something that someone without that will never learn.” — RJ Mitte, actor.
