I had a chance to sit in on a nationwide meeting about Hearing Loops and T-Coil hearing aides. It’s a fantastic concept! Here’s the gist of it:
A lot of hearing aides today come with a T-Coil built in. Sometimes the audiologist isn’t even sure how it works. But by tapping a button on the aide, it will pick up P.A. systems that have a hearing loop set up for it. This is night and day for people with hearing loss. I was just at an event with a P.A. system and if I looked away from the speaker I couldn’t really hear what he was saying because of echoes and garbling.
One of our new advocacy issues is getting the Palouse more aware of Hearing Loop systems so that people with hearing loss can attend presentations or anything else that uses a P.A. System. But the pool exercise class won’t count. You can’t wear your hearing aide in the water!
