Those who have a strong IL Philosophy also have a strong set of values. They generally believe that ALL people should have the same rights. They believe in the dignity and worth of all people. Independent living principles evolve from these values. A principle is a basic truth, or assumption, or even just a standard of behavior.

A commitment to civil rights, with no discrimination on the basis of disability.

People with disabilities are a protected class. People with disabilities have faced widespread discrimination, segregation, and exclusion. You have the right to vote. You have the right to work. You have the right to an education. You have the right to access the same public spaces as everyone else in your community. And you have the right to access health care.

The ADA assures us of these rights, but there is still much to do to remove barriers so everyone can live as they choose.
