Those who have a strong IL Philosophy also have a strong set of values. They generally believe that ALL people should have the same rights. They believe in the dignity and worth of all people. Independent living principles evolve from these values. A principle is a basic truth, or assumption, or even just a standard of behavior.

All persons must have access to community-based living and no person should be institutionalized on the basis of disability.

The idea that people with and without disabilities should live together in the same neighborhoods, towns, or cities is a legal right in the United States, and is a major focus of national policy. Community-based living allows people to: choose where and with whom they live, work and earn a living wage, participate in the community, have relationships, carry out citizenship responsibilities, and continue to learn and grow and make informed choices.
