Backpacking with Parkinson’s

Pass to Pass is a nonprofit organization whose mission it is to promote exercise and healthy living for people with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). Since 2016, Pass to Pass has held multi-night backpacking trips to create awareness of PD, build confidence, cultivate a peer community, nourish wellbeing and minimize symptoms through exercise.

The trips on the Pacific Crest Trail are assisted by volunteer support hikers and llamas, allowing the PD hiker to carry only a small daypack weighing 15-18 pounds. Pass to Pass is funded by donations, so there is no fee to participate in hikes.

2023 was a great year 9 trips, 46 PD hikers, and 59 support hikers They used 16 llamas and hiked 2629 cumulative miles. The hikers came from 12 different states and 1 Canadian province. The testimonies they have received of how hiking in nature with others who are experiencing similar challenges has had a positive impact on them. They are currently preparing for the new year with information about 12 new trips. They also host regional dayhikes. They currently have leaders in Washington, Oregon, Southern California, Utah, New York and New England. Participants are being recruited now! Difficulty ranges from easy day hikes at Mt. Ranier and Joshua Tree to advanced hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail and John Muir Trail. You can even bring a family support hiker with you, or use one of their volunteers.

Most trips are 5 nights/6 days averaging 5 miles a day. They provide a comfy sleeping pad and camp stool with back support.
