NATIONAL ADVOCACY FOR DISABILITY
DAC NW participated again in the Caravan for Disability Freedom and Justice tour as volunteer drivers. This time we took the caravan through New England for 10 days.
We picked it up in Providence, Rhode Island and made a stop the following morning at Cape Organization for Rights of the Disabled (CORD). Then we headed out for the Cape Cod Maritime Museum.
We drove out to Concord Massachusetts to the location where “The shot heard round the world” happened. The 250th anniversary of the start of the Revolutionary War will be next April! The Robbins House is a two-family home built (c.1800s) for the children of slavery survivor and Revolutionary War veteran Caesar Robbins.
Next we went to Boston for the 50th anniversary of the Boston Center for Independent Living celebration. It was there we got news that Tennessee Representative Steve Cohen filed paperwork to initiate a Discharge Petition which can send the Latonya Reeves Freedom Act to the floor of the House for a vote! This would expand in home care through Medicaid for states that don’t allow for it.
We drove it all the out the cape to P-Town and back and then headed to University of Massachusetts, in Amherst, for a disability advocacy day. There we met the staff from Stavros Center for Independent Living.
A rainy drive took us to Montpelier Vermont for an event outside the state capitol where we met staff from Vermont Center for Independent Living. Vermont is truly beautiful and we would love to go back! All through our trip we met wonderful people doing the same work as DAC NW. We encouraged people to get out the disability vote and advocated for getting and keeping people out of institutions and into their own homes. Something at the heart of our mission.
