July is Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month is celebrated by the disabled community in an effort to celebrate our community, raise awareness of our needs and contributions and honor our history. Across the country, celebrations are planned to do just that.

Did you know that the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL) holds their annual conference in July in DC? That’s right! As a part of their annual conference, NCIL organizes a march in Washington, DC. This year’s theme is “March On!” and will take place on Tuesday, July 25 followed by a rally at the Capitol Building.

This peaceful march is intended to get the attention of lawmakers and other decision makers around disability rights issues. For more information about the conference and the march, visit their website.

Can’t be in DC but want to show your Disability Pride? Here are a few cool websites with some creative ideas! The folks at Easter Seals are hosting a virtual parade to celebrate! As a part of that, they have created some great themed graphics to use on your social media accounts. To check it out, visit their website here.

Too hot to go outside? Need some good entertainment? Check out “The Evolution of Disability in Film” on PBS, “Crip Camp” on Netflix and “CODA” on Apple TV.

Share your disability experience with others. Make it a part of your routine. Attending a city council meeting? Great! Talk with a Council person afterwards to thank them for how they are helping our community. Watching your nephew’s game? Make conversation with the person sitting next to you and let them know how you love being included in your nephew’s life. Being seen and heard in the community is what it’s all about!
