Creating an Accessible Home for the Holidays
Thanksgiving is a time for family and friends to gather and celebrate being together. However, if your home isn’t accessible, it can make hosting challenging, especially for guests with mobility issues or other disabilities.
Here are some tips to ensure everyone feels welcome this holiday season.
1.Clear Pathways – Start by ensuring pathways throughout your home are clear of any obstacles. Move furniture, decorations, or anything that could hinder movement. Walkways should be 36″ to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers. A clear path to the dining area is essential. Consider renting a venue that is accessible.
2. Accessible Entrances – If your home has steps leading to the front door, consider providing a portable ramp, or look at other entrances that may be more accessible (garage, back door, etc.) A sturdy handrail and good lighting can help assist guests.
3. Dining Area Considerations – When setting up the dining area, ensure tables are a suitable height for those who may be in wheelchairs. Expand your table so that everyone can be accommodated comfortably. And remember to allow for easy movement around the table.
4. Restroom Accessibility – Make sure your bathroom is accessible. If not already equipped, consider adding grab bars, near the toilet and in the shower or bathtub. Utilize a portable shower chair if needed for added safety and comfort. Stock the restroom with necessary items like toilet paper, towels and hand soap in easy reach.
5. Provide Seating Options – Have a variety of seating options including chairs with armrests for support. Make sure these seats are easily accessible for those who may need them. Have extra cushions or pillows on hand for added comfort.
6. Create a comfortable Atmosphere – Pay attention to the overall atmosphere of your home. Ensure you have good lighting, especially in hallways and common areas. Keep background music soft so it doesn’t overwhelm conversations.
7. Communicate with Guests – Reach out to your guests about any specific needs they may have and show you are willing to accommodate them.
By taking these steps you can create an inclusive environment where everyone can enjoy the festivities. A little preparation goes a long way ensuring your Thanksgiving is not only memorable, but accessible for all.
