DRIVING & DISABILITY: A BIG CHALLENGE IN IDAHO

Are you between 18 and 35 years old, have a mobility disability, and can’t find a driving teacher? Or maybe you need special tools, like hand controls, to drive but there’s no one to help you learn?

Learning to drive and having your own car is a big step for anyone. It helps people get to school, work, or other important places. In Idaho, it’s especially important because public transportation is very limited, especially in small towns.

Sadly, there aren’t many driving programs for people with disabilities in Idaho. There are no driving schools that have cars with special equipment for people who need them. And there are no programs that teach both regular driving and how to use adaptive tools, like hand controls or left-side gas pedals.

LINC is working to fix this problem. We want to hear from young adults who have had trouble getting or renewing their driver’s license because of their disability. We are starting a campaign to help these young adults become leaders and make sure people in Idaho understand why we need better driving programs for people with disabilities. Our goal is to get funding for a special driver training program and car in Idaho.

You can help! The best way to make this happen is by sharing your story and educating decision makers, like legislators and agency staff. And you don’t have to do it alone! If you or someone you know has faced this challenge, please fill out our driver training form and join us in this important work.
