Adding Sunflower Services in Theme Parks
For the first time, Sesame Place Philadelphia will offer a discrete way for park workers to identify people who may need additional help even if they have a hidden disability.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program is already in use in many airports and businesses around the world. Entirely voluntary, people with neurological, cognitive, neurodevelopmental issues and physical, visual, auditory, sensory and processing difficulties can receive extra time and understanding. Sesame Place staff, known as Ambassadors, will receive additional accessibility training.
“We are thrilled to welcome Sesame Place as the first theme park in the United States to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program. Sesame Place has committed time and passion to implement the training to ensure that Sunflower wearers are recognized by their ambassadors to receive the additional support, understanding and kindness they may need,” said Lynn Smith, regional director for the Sunflower program in the United States.
This new program augments the existing disability accommodations.
Sesame Place Philadelphia was also the first destination of its kind to be designated as a Certified Autism Center meaning that there are sensory guides, quiet rooms as well as other resources and staff are trained to assist those with autism.
“Sesame Place Philadelphia is proud to be an industry leader in accessibility,” said Cathy Valeriano, president of Sesame Place Philadelphia. “Our new program furthers the park’s commitment to providing an inclusive environment and helps create memorable, meaningful experiences for our guests.”
