Question of the Month – NW ADA Center – Idaho

QUESTION:

The top loading only dumpster at my accessible apartment complex is large and on a slight slope. On top of that, there is also the fact that during the winter they do not shovel a pathway to the dumpster so there is no access to the dumpster during the winter. What can be done in a situation like this?

ANSWER:

A person can request a reasonable accommodation to either get maintenance or a property manager to pick up their garbage, or they can install an accessible garbage area with a smaller bin, located on level ground. And it should be cleared of snow in a reasonable time frame.

Do it in writing (letter or email) so you have a record. For some tips on how to request an accommodation under the FHA Intermountain Fair Housing Council, check out this link.
