The Latonya Reeves Freedom Act is bipartisan and bicameral civil rights legislation that addresses the injustice of people who need Long Term Services and Supports (LTS) being forced into institutions.
A majority of the house has signed on as cosponsors of the act, and would protect and strengthen the integration mandate of the Olmstead decision, giving disabled people the enforceable civil right to live in freedom.
Sixteen Republicans have cosponsored the legislation, but the Republican Leadership in the House is refusing to allow the bill to get a hearing and allow for a vote. Representative Cohen, the bill’s sponsor, is currently circulating a sign-on letter to request that the bill be given a hearing, and ensure that the bill has the opportunity to receive a vote on the House floor. Representative Cohen filed paperwork earlier that allows him to initiate a Discharge Petition. If 218 members of the House sign the Discharge Petition, the bill – as written – will bypass the committees and go to the floor of the House for a vote.
We have never been this close to passing legislation that would FREE OUR PEOPLE!
We call on the current cosponsors and other members of the House to commit to signing Representative Cohen’s discharge petition and voting to pass the Latonya Reeves Freedom Act when it goes to the House floor.
Congress is on recess until after the November election.
