QUESTION:
Do I have to have accessible exam tables and scales in my medical practice?
ANSWER:
Yes. By July 8, 2026, at lease one examination table and one accessible weight scare that meets the MDE standards must be acquired, if used in the facility and the facility receive federal money (like from Medicaid/Medicare).
The updated Section 504 rule clarifies how it applies to modern healthcare, technology, and social services. All MDE that recipients purchase, lease, or otherwise acquire after July 8, 2024, must meet MDE standards. This includes exam tables with a low transfer height of 17-19 inches from the floor. They also need enough clearance space alongside for a wheelchair or lift to get close. And it should include side rails or grab bars. Scales must also be wheelchair accessible. Private practices are required to meet these standards if they see Medicaid/Medicare patients and/or receive any federal funding. Before this rule, accessible equipment standards existed on paper but weren’t enforceable. After July 8, 2026, these are legally binding.
