DAC NW HOSTS PD SUPPORT GROUP
If you have Parkinson’s disease (PD) and live in the Palouse, there’s a newly formed group just for you. It’s called Peer2Peer Parkinson’s Disease Support Group (P2P PD), and it’s for people with PD and their care partners.
The Palouse has few resources for people with PD.
P2P PD was founded to be a place for people with PD to share experiences,
encourage those who are struggling, and learn what resources are available.
It can feel devastating to receive a diagnosis of PD. There’s nothing to prepare you for it. But a PD peer support group can help you deal with those feelings. The group can reassure you that having this disease does not mean your life is over; it just means you are going to live your life differently from now on. Support group members know what they are talking about because they, too, have been there. A support group is also a good place to learn about tools and tips to help you adapt to your new life.
PD is on the rise worldwide. Rates are high in Washington state. The Parkinson’s Foundation says roughly 90,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with the disease each year, and that number is climbing. According to them, PD is now the second-most common neurodegenerative disease with Alzheimer’s disease being the first. PD is often thought of as an older person’s disease, but it also affects people in their 20s and on up. For example, Michael J. Fox was 29 years old when he received his diagnosis. He is now 64.
The P2P PD group meets the third Thursday of every month at the Disability Action Center at 505 N Main Street in Moscow, Idaho. At each meeting, there is a topic, speaker, peer time (where members share their experiences), and snacks. October’s topic will be “Technical Assistance for Your PD,” and the speakers will be both the Idaho Assistive Technology Project and the Washington Assistive Technology Act Program (also known as WATAP).
